Barktholomew (ハウリングウルフ Hauringu Urufu?, "Howling Wolf") is the boss of Chapter 1 of Balan Wonderworld. Crafted from Jose Gallard's heart in the form of a wolf, he was created by Lance to prevent Emma Cole and Leo Craig from progressing.

Boss Information[]

"[Barktholomew] Lurks in the depths of the worlds born from hearts and plagues Jose’s heart. Controlling a tornado, it attacks the protagonist. Show enough strength to withstand the storm and Jose's heart will be freed!" - Official Website Description

Abilities[]

This Nega Boss has three attacks. His first attack revolves around jumping across the arena with his Jumping Jack aspect, and then using his Pounding Pig aspect to crush the player. His second attack utilises the Tornado Wolf aspect of himself to summon large tornadoes to send at the player [number scaling by how many hits left before his destruction]. His rage attack revolves around him raising 4 pillars from the ground and jumping on the tallest one, and then proceeding to rain 3 fireballs from the sky using his Dainty Dragon aspect.

Appearance[]

He is composed of Tornado Wolf, Jumping Jack, Pounding Pig and Dainty Dragon, all used for corrupting Jose Gallard's heart.

Barktholomew looks a lot like the big bad wolf with some fire at the centre of his body. His fur is different shades of purple, with some black at his groin region. His wrists and groin region are covered in golden swirls, and his feet are black with reddish-orange swirls characteristic of the Negati. On his head is a set of horns. His hands are pentadactyl and official artwork depicts him with tridactyl feet.

Boss Fight[]

Statue Method
1 Strike the boss after he makes a landing. You can also do this as he drops, but Tornado Wolf must be selected to hit his body.
2 Deflect one of his tornados at him with Tornado Wolf.
3 Use Pounding Pig and slam a post as the boss does his rage attack.

Provided Costumes: Tornado Wolf, Pounding Pig

Costume Concept[]

  • Tornado Wolf: His head, torso, and tail, while his ability to summon tornadoes is similar to Tornado Wolf's ability to make the wearer spin violently when jumping, creating miniature tornadoes around them.
  • Jumping Jack: His legs, while his flailing is similar to Jumping Jack's flutter jump.
  • Dainty Dragon: His core and horns, while he shoots out fire.
  • Pounding Pig: His ground pound attacks (after jumping towards the player and creating pillars to get to higher ground), while the golden accents around his waist are similar to Pounding Pig's belt.

Trivia[]

  • Barktholomew is one of three Nega Bosses who have visible legs; the other two are Cuckoo and the Purrla.
    • Out of these Barktholomew is the only one who does not have a 4-quarter time theme in-battle, as his theme is a 3/4 time song.
  • His tornado summoning attack represents Jose Gallard's loss of his corn fields.
  • Barktholomew might be a reference to the Big Bad Wolf from the classic fable, "The Three Little Pigs." Both characters use strong winds to attack (in the case of Barktholomew, to harm the player; the Big Bad Wolf uses his to destroy the titular protagonists' houses in The Three Little Pigs).
  • Despite his appearance, Barktholomew almost shares a resemblance with Cerberus from NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (mostly because his barks and howls sound exactly like a dog) and Clawz from NiGHTS into Dreams.
  • Barktholomew is one of three bosses that can be stopped by something in their arena; in his case, he can take damage if Emma uses the Pounding Pig to make the post that Barktholomew is standing on during his rage attack suddenly rise up.
    • Worville Wright activates the vents during his rage attack, and Emma can use the Soaring Sheep Costume's power to ride them to his nose.
    • The Purrla tends to stand on traffic lights that can be shattered with the Pumpkin Puncher costume's punch attack.
    • Princess Marey shares Barktholomew's vulnerability to pounding weapons during her own ground-pound attack, as she can get hit by the Pounding Robot slamming the stage itself when she lands.
